In this wiki, we group digital security tools into four broad categories by their main utility or function, namely
- Circumvention and anonymity tools for bypassing censorship and surveillance on the internet;
- Communications and messaging applications for secure email, chats, calls, and meetings;
- Documentation and data management solutions for encrypted storage and transfer of electronic files and digital records; and
- Internet browsing and productivity software for using the internet and working online safely.
As much as possible, we include free and open-source tools in this wiki, i.e. you have the freedom to use, modify, and redistribute the source code of these tools without any restriction.
Some tools in this wiki are tagged as:
- Web app – you can use this tool directly on an internet browser without having to install it on your device;
- Self-hosting – you can run and maintain an instance of this tool on a server that you control; and
- Cross-platform – you can install this tool on your desktop and mobile devices running popular operating systems.
We also flag certain tools as:
- Closed source – this tool does not have publicly available and verifiable source code;
- Freemium – this tool is available for free but additional storage, bandwidth, or features are available with a paid upgrade; and
- Premium – this tool is only available with a paid subscription.
