digisec.wiki is a volunteer-run community wiki for human rights defenders to share knowledge and resources on digital security and online safety.

You can help improve this wiki by adding new pages or by updating existing ones.

To edit any version of digisec.wiki, you need a user account. You do not have to create different accounts to edit different versions of digisec.wiki (English and non-English ones).

If you do not have a user account, you can request one online by completing the sign-up form or emailing [email protected] (public key).

You need to confirm your registered email address and enable two-factor authentication before you can edit pages on digisec.wiki.

Wikimedia Commons

WikiMedia Commons

We encourage using Wikimedia Commons for public domain and freely licenced images, videos, and other kinds of media. You need a Wikimedia account to upload files. If you already have a Wikipedia account, you can use it on WikiMedia Commons.

Public domain

By editing any version of digisec.wiki, you agree to making any contribution that you authored public domain as per CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication.

Dos and dont's

DO use templates to create a reusable blocks of content. For example, you can use Template:Tools when listing a tool.

DO explicitly flag tools in the following categories:

  • Freemium – this tool is available for free but additional storage, bandwidth, or features are available with a paid upgrade;
  • Premium – this tool is only available with a paid subscription;
  • Closed source – this tool does not have publicly available and verifiable source code; or
  • State-run – this tool is hosted by a government agency or government-linked entity.

DO correct grammar and spelling mistakes and edit for consistency.

DO conform with Wikepedia Manual of Style for consistency and readability. You should follow similar style guides for other languages like Burmese (မြန်မာဘာသာ) and Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia).

DO write in simple language. Take into account how your work might be translated into another language or adapted into learning resource.

DO add attributions, references, or sources as footnotes/citations using <ref>...</ref>.

DO link pages on the same topic in other languages. For example, in the Main Page, add [[id:Halaman Utama]] for its Indonesian version and [[my:ဗဟိုစာမျက်နှာ]] for Burmese.

DO use images from Wikimedia Commons or upload new ones there (account required).

DO NOT insert an image unless it is in the public domain or freely licenced.

DO NOT add new guides that have not been updated for more than five years. An exception can be made if the content has not gone out of date.

DO NOT recommend tools that are directly or indirectly supported or subsidised by an advertising-based business model.

DO NOT recommend closed-source products of big tech corporations (e.g. Alphabet/Google, Amazon, Apple, Meta/Facebook, Microsoft, etc).

DO NOT create any page about an individual person. Instead, create a page about the organisation or collective that this person belongs to. You can include relevant work by the organisation or collective.

DO NOT use any affiliate or tracking link.
